HLS Formats

Last Updated 5 days ago

Quickchannel automatically creates multiple versions of uploaded media for playback at different resolutions and connection speeds.

To view the formats configured for your account, go to Settings → Upload → Formats.

The Formats page displays the account configuration for Fallback Formats, HLS and Originals.

Fallback Formats

Fallback Formats are used for playback when HLS is not supported.

The table shows the fallback formats configured for the account, including:

  • Name
  • Width and height
  • Maximum bitrate
  • Maximum frame rate
  • Audio bitrate
  • Audio format
  • Total bitrate

HLS

The HLS section shows the HLS renditions configured for the account.

HLS provides adaptive playback using multiple renditions of the same media. This allows playback to adapt to factors such as the viewer's available connection and device capabilities.

For each configured HLS rendition, the page displays:

  • Name
  • Width and height
  • Maximum bitrate
  • Maximum frame rate
  • Audio bitrate
  • Audio format
  • Total bitrate

The exact resolutions and bitrates available depend on the configuration of your Quickchannel account.

For recommendations when preparing media for upload, see Recommended upload format.

Originals

The Originals section shows whether your account is configured to save uploaded files in their original format.

When original file storage is enabled, the original source file is retained in addition to the formats created by Quickchannel.

Downloading the original source file can be useful when the media needs to be used in external editing or video applications. Transcoded HLS formats downloaded from Quickchannel are converted to fragmented MP4 files and may not be fully supported by some third-party applications.

For more information, see Using downloaded files in external programs.
