Overview

Hierarchical Categories allow you to organize media using a nested category structure with up to five levels of categories and subcategories.

Instead of managing one flat list of categories, you can create parent and child categories to build a structure that better reflects departments, topics, content types, or other organizational needs.

The same category hierarchy is used when managing media in the Quickchannel platform and when viewers browse content on Videosite.

Create Categories and Subcategories

To create a new category:

1. Go to Settings > Metadata.
2. Click Add Category.
3. Enter a name for the new category.
4. Select a Parent category to choose where the new category should be placed in the hierarchy.
5. To create a top-level category, leave Parent category set to No category.
6. Click Add category.

You can create a hierarchy containing up to five category levels.

Arrange Categories and Subcategories

You can reorganize your existing category hierarchy using drag and drop.

1. Go to Settings > Metadata.
2. Locate the category you want to move.
3. Grab the category using the six-dot drag handle.
4. Drag it to its new position in the category tree.
5. Drop the category in the desired location.

When you move a category, all of its subcategories move with it.

A category hierarchy can contain a maximum of five levels. If moving a category would create more than five levels, a warning is displayed and the category automatically returns to its previous position.

Note: The category tree is used both in the Media list and on Videosite. Make sure to create a structure that works well in both places.

Working with Categories in the Media List

Filter Media by Category

The category tree is displayed on the left side of the Media list.

Click a category to filter the Media list.

When selecting a category, the list includes media assigned directly to the selected category as well as media assigned to any of its subcategories.

Assign or Change a Category for Media

There are three ways to assign or change the category of media directly from the Media list.

Option 1: Use the Category Column

1. Locate the media in the Media list.
2. Click its category in the Category column.
3. Select the desired category from the dropdown.

Option 2: Drag Media to a Category

You can also assign a category using drag and drop.

1. Grab the media item by its poster image.
2. Drag it to the category tree on the left.
3. Drop it onto the desired category.

Option 3: Bulk Update Categories

To change the category for multiple media items:

1. Select the checkboxes next to the media items you want to update.
2. Select the desired category from the bulk update options.

Assign or Change a Category from Media Overview

You can also change the category from an individual media item's Overview page.

1. Open the media item.
2. Go to Overview.
3. Click the Category dropdown.
4. Select the desired category.

Categories in Videosite

Hierarchical Categories can also be used on Videosite to help viewers navigate and discover content.

Change the Category Order in Videosite

In the Quickchannel platform, categories within the same level are displayed alphabetically.

Videosite allows you to override the alphabetical order and arrange categories in a custom order. This only affects Videosite and does not change their order in the platform.

To change the order:

1. Go to Settings > Videosite.
2. Click the wrench icon for the Videosite you want to configure.
3. Click Categories in the top menu of the Videosite customizer.
4. Grab a category using the six-dot drag handle.
5. Drag it to the desired position.
6. Save your changes.

Note: In the Videosite customizer, categories can only be rearranged within the same level and with the same parent.

To move a category to another parent, go to Settings > Metadata in the Quickchannel platform.

Show or Hide Categories in Videosite

You can control whether a category is displayed in the Videosite menu.

Go to Settings > Metadata and click the eye icon in the Actions column for the category you want to show or hide.

There are three possible visibility states:

Visible
The category is displayed in the Videosite menu.

Not visible
The category is hidden from the Videosite menu. In Console dropdowns, the category is labeled (Non public).

Visibility disabled
The category is hidden because one of its parent categories is set to Not visible. All subcategories below a hidden parent category are hidden as well.

Note: Category visibility does not affect the visibility of the media inside the category. Media visibility must be configured separately for each media item.

You can also control category visibility directly from the Videosite customizer.

Click the eye icon to the right of a category name to show or hide it.

The visibility states are:

Visible
The category is displayed in the Videosite menu.

Not visible
The category is hidden from the Videosite menu.

Visibility disabled
The category cannot be displayed because one of its parent categories is hidden.

When a parent category is hidden, all of its subcategories are hidden as well.

Note: Hiding a category does not hide the media assigned to that category. Media visibility is controlled separately on each media item.

Browse and Filter Categories in Videosite

Visible top-level categories are displayed in the Videosite menu.

If there are more top-level categories than can fit on the screen, the remaining categories are available under More.

When a viewer selects a category, Videosite displays media assigned to the selected category and any of its subcategories.
